It's just one lightbulb

What's just one lightbulb?

I posted this earlier and thought that I should take it back off the site.......I don't know why exactly. I was under the palm trees contemplating what I have been reading. I have heard it said that our little bit isn't harming anything.....that it was silly of gore to suggest that we change a lightbulb and that this would change the rate of consumption. It occurred to me that it's not just one lightbulb. If we all do what we can, then it's billions of lightbulbs. Perhaps we are not affecting things as much as is being told, but I tend to think that with 6.5 billion of us inhabiting this planet, that we really are having a profound effect. Sure....one lightbulb changed in one home may not contribute to any change, but one light bulb in 2 billion homes.....that can create a palpable change. And if this action leads to other actions then the effect can multiply exponentially. I think that going green is more about having the respect to take only what you need....then conservation sets in motion on it's own.

in the spirit of unity

Truly,

Misty

I tend to  feel as you seem to indicate, Stefa; with all the 50,000 manufactured chemicals in our environment--our food, our water, our soil and air since 1950 recycling seems like putting a band aid on a cancer. I know there is value in being conscious of our environment and making efforts to take care of it. And, I believe, we need to consider the sinister agenda of the people who've put lead in gasoline, mercury in vaccines and 50,000 toxic chemicals into our external metabolism.

Blessings to you all,

John

Thanks for the rebuttal Stefa.... I relish it.

I certainly don't do '''all I can''.....but I am beginning to try and I feel that it's not so much about making an impact as it is becoming aware of my own personal actions and the effect that it has on ''my'' environment. I feel that if ALL of Us make the decision and take the actions to curb overconsumption (which to me is a manifestation of greed) that our actions could work together to ''force'' change in industry. What we choose to buy and how we choose to handle our waste can send a clear message of our desire to be more conscious of the effects of our own actions. If we could just come together and realise that we have the control. But alas, in the words of   Cake.....''excess ain't rebellion, your'e drinking what theyr'e selling''

I have high ideals and can only hope that humanity will begin working together.

I have a new child and am astounded at the amount of diapers that i use......would someone please come up with a better diaper....*smile*

And the awareness of this is opening up other awarenesses in me. I find though, that I don't know what to do.....to make things better. We need active voices who will offer more than arbitrary hope and ''a change that we can believe in''. We need active voices with well thought solutions....simple steps that affect true results.

But...hey....I still shop at Wal-Mart.....cause all the small businesses are gone. I don't do all that I can but I feel that the first step is to become aware of our actions.

perhaps it is will only amount to self satisfaction. for now, for me, that's enough. I can only work on myself. i do offer my hope, my love and my concern for my homeland and All my Relations.

Thanks for the opportunity to banter.

Looking foward to more.

Stefa,

I believe we are on the same page. This is not a time for following the leader. Now, I find myself more interested in taking personal responsibility for changing this genocidal system of oppression, manipulation, dominance and control. However, opposition is the oppo-same--confrontation is on the same plane as the problem and both reifies it/them/their agenda and invests our attention and emotional energy to their focus. Far wiser, I believe, to envision/en-feel what a world that actually works for every one, where each one takes personal responsibility for the future with the best and highest in mind for everyone concerned might be like and pray that enough of us can receive and hold and sustain that vision/felt-sense, long enough to allow the universe to rearrange itself to accommodate our picture of reality.

It makes sense to me anyway.

Blessings,

John

...just what our individual actions will create.  One person's recycling brings harmony to that person and that might be enough but it also brings "har-money" to the recycling company.  Once an individual knows what is harmony and follows that path it strengthens the soul.  Step off the path and feel part of the strength ebb away.  I go to Walmart at times with my mom and everytime I step into the store I feel compromised and if I buy something I feel a little sick but I still do it.  I am so glad that happens because it tells me that I am still a conscious human being.

This high efficient light bulb may not be the saving grace it is cracked up to be but the the wolf in sheep's clothing.  Those spiral tubes of glass have mercury in them and we are to dispose separately from other trash in a safe non-contaminating disposal.  There may be some places that have a spiral tube light bulb disposal but not here in central Iowa.  And, if there were I really don't think that the populace would bother or even think of going to the "trouble" of taking an extra step toward ecology.  I really can hear my neighbors and my relatives say, "My God, they twisted my arm to buy all these new fangled bulbs and now they want me to do what?  Forget it!"  I am not kidding.  We might just be mercury poisoning our planet with spiral tubes.  Who does make those things anyway and whose idea was it that we should do this?  This might be another money grabbing hoax on the population.  Does this sound cynical?

(YUMMM!....   I just tasted the custard that I made and I put lemon pepper in it this time!)

I can't prove this but it seems to me that the universe is made to self destruct if it gets too far out of balance and this goes for the largest to the smallest.  Perhaps the greed/power/etc. air that has been blown into the finite balloon is reaching a climax.  All of us are Divinely guided and guarded and that doesn't mean that we won't be blown up but those of us who are in touch with the Divinity within us and around us will have a good time anyway

Oops!  I think I just got away from my Fundamentalism where the fun comes before the mentalism, according to the swami.  Namaste...

Kate, you're right about those twisty fluorescents. They are poison. The EPA has a paper that's several pages long, telling what to do if you break one. The solution isn't a new kind of bulb, it's a new kind of light.

I think that you have a lot of information to offer Stefa.

lightwins's picture

Stefa,
“Far wiser, I believe…” is simply what appears to me to be a far wiser course. I mean to say that I am interested in envisioning/en-feeling a world that is not framed divisive dual-ized terms, that is not primarily described in terms of competition, confrontation, opposition, antagonism and warfare. What I am interested in seeding and creating is a world where each person takes responsibility for their own life, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life, where there is an atmosphere of allowance, cooperation mutual support and a sense of evolving, individually, together.
Riversong,
Thanks for the good joke. And yes, holding the long term vision, take whatever steps are revealed before me that are in harmony with it.
Blessings,
John

I have actually thought about holding my 6month old over the commode. I think that after the first few times that she would understand......lol....she is pretty astute....

I'm gonna look into the diapers.

I think that was very well said. I have much respect for the learning that I gain from All of You. And, I find my self in line with your statement.

(By the way John....thanks for the postings on what's in our drinking water and diet. I've been making small changes because of it....and i feel great.

And all of the jokes are hilarious.)

I am glad to be here.

Thanks be to you all.

Compact fluorescents are fine (except for the mercury), as is recycling
the enormous volume of waste we produce. But, until we drastically
reduce our consumption...then we're not going to stop being
parasites on the Mother.

Mother is, of course, a host, and designed that way.  We take so much more than we need that we not only deny large numbers of our own species the bare necessities, but we've begun to take them from other species as well.  This could only happen through a total disconnect from All That Is.  Sure, a more efficient lightbulb is a baby step in the right direction.  So is going to sleep when the sun goes down.  We're parasites, if you choose to define us that way, as long as we remain alive.  We consume in order to live, as does every other form of life.

Historical and archaeological remains make it pretty clear that even the earliest peoples lived a pretty fulfilled life.  The expulsion from the garden didn't happen all at once, but bit by bit, as people decided they could make it better.  Probably the first bow or the first spear-chucker started the whole technological trap in motion.  Maybe it was the discovery of alcohol, or the invention of soap.  Maybe it was as simple as the first crude fence set about a stand of wild barley to keep the rabbits out.  However gently it began, if it's taught us anything it's that the gods must be crazy.

Mary's right. LEDs are coming into their own. They are not the perfect equavalent of the light bulb we're all used to, but as they become mainstream their many virtues will begin to um, shine. Still, what about the manufacture and transport of LEDs? Can we do better? Maybe...one possibility for bringing sunlight into interior rooms is fiber optics. If certain legends are true, our distant ancestors made large crystals glow and give off light. Perhaps we will rediscover this secret. Meanwhile, Mary's right. LEDs are terrific. With a small solar panel and a couple of golf cart batteries, you can light a cabin or a garden, and power a fountain. With a more elaborate set up you can run small appliances, a TV or a computer. With DC that you generate and store yourself, you have a choice of a variety of power sources, you're unlikely to shock yourself or burn your house down, and best of all you're in control.

Rising up in the name of change for the better can have all that John is talking about and have the appearance of opposition. I have learned so much from watching the Zapatistas and listening to Comandante Marcos talk of a revolution in service of a people, not primarily an opposition to force. He really gets it while being on the front line. It is a beautiful thing to watch when revolution comes with gracious intelligence prepared to be fierce when necessary.

I've always been like that. All my life I have freely given away anything that I own....Ive never felt like I owned anything. And all my life I have been given everything that I have asked for and so much more.  Like when I said....'' I guess I should finally get a car. Maybe a Toyota Celica....for about  400 dollars''  Then I told my mate  "sitting in someones yard right now...is a car that they do not drive. And soon I will be driving it.''

Maybe 3 weeks later, I was visiting my family in Georgia (state) and found out that my cousin had a Toyota, Celica in his front yard that he would sell to me....I asked him to name a price and he said   "I dunno, 400?"     I didn't even look at it....I just agreed right there. I took the car home and was working so that I could gather 400 dollars to give to my cousin when my Granny called and said that she had been thinking that since she had helped out all of my cousins....and since I never asked her for anything...that she would pay for the car.....WOW!!

lol.....I still don't have a car  (guess I don't want one). I drove the Celica for a while and then I gave it to my mate......*smile*
