Comet Elenin and its affect on Earth

I have never heard of this until a friend of mine sent this to me today asking my opinion.  My gut reaction is that it is not something to be concerned with, but I wanted to get everyones opinion and wondered if you have heard of this Comet or done any research on it.

Thanks!

I have been watching an odd-looking star which appears, from my vantage point, below and to the left of the constellation Orion.  It is freakishly bright and scintillates in colors of red, white, and blue.  Since it appears in the southern sky, I have wondered if it is Planet X which is rumored to be on course to orbit dangerously close to the Earth from the south.

I'm curious to know if any of you have noticed this odd star.  (Since I live in Europe, its location may differ from your point of view.)  You can't miss it.  It's the brightest one in the sky.  I find it pecular that I am unable to find any accounts of it online.

Your guess is as good as mine as to what this is all about.

I believe you are looking at Sirius. It is the brightest star in the sky and it is a spectum of colors because it is a binary twin a blue-white star and a red dwarf. Anecdotally, when an anthropologist was studying the ancient Dogon tribe in Africa, after she'd won their confidence, they showed her an ancient carving in a cave. It depicted a round hole surrounded by a circle with a smaller round hole on it. They said that thousands of years previously, beings from Sirius came and taught them agriculture & spiritual truths. They said that these beings didn't actually come from the big blue-white star but from a smaller red one that revolves around it once every 75 years.

This was taken to be a myth untlil telescopes discened the red dwarf and detemined that its period of revolution was 75 years!

I think you're right, John.  Sirius is just to left of Orion.  Nice to know it's not anything serious!
