Just for fun

Hi, all.

Mary (Call me Mary) and I put our heads together and came up with an idea to get people talking.  We'd love to hear what everyone is thinking on a multitude of different topics, so we thought it would be fun to do a "question of the week" post.  We'll try to make them provocative and meaningful.  If you have suggestions for questions, send em over - or post them yourselves. :)

It's our intent to stir up some thinking and conversation, and give all of us a vehicle to share more of our personal stories with the G-Spot team.  I hope it's something we'll all participate in, and find exciting and fun.  Look for the first topic coming soon.

Much love and light to you,

Kathy

I am busily involved in learning the Gayatri Mantra.  This is one of the oldest and most meaningful and beautiful mantras from the Rig Veda of the Hindu tradition.

Om bhûr, bhuvas, suvaha

Tat savitur varenyam

Bhargo devasya dhîmahi

Dhiyo yo nah pracho'odayât

All of this is a recognition of Oneness of the All and the desire to become aware of the Oneness with that One. OM!

One translation says:

We meditate upon the radiant Divine Light
of that most excellent Source of Spiritual Consciousness;
May it awaken our intuitional consciousness.

Here is Deva Premal chanting the Gayatri Mantra.  Enjoy

Berry,

Good afternoon, and thank you for posting this!  I love Deva, and really love this chant as well.  She has such a beautiful voice.  She works with the Oneness Movement, out of India, and infuses the Oneness Blessing in much of her music.

Much love and light to you,

Kathy

A few years ago I had a friend send me the Gayatri Mantra while we were chatting on an instant messaging forum.  He said it was a neat song that his yoga teacher played in class.  I was so enthralled with Deva’s magnificent voice and this “song” that touched me.  I listened to it over and over and over.    I sat by my cd player, playing it over and over, struggling to figure out how to sing along with it.  (I’m not very good at new languages!)  At some point I searched the internet for the words and was surprised that this was not just a song – but a very powerful mantra!   When the world gets tough for me…. This is what I play… over and over again.  I don’t think I could ever get tired of it.   (I can even sing it to myself if need be.)   I have it on my work computer and when those days come along where no one is getting along very well….. I will play it softly.      It may not help anyone else… but it helps me!

Thanks for the links to the "youtubes"!  I look forward to listening to them after I get home from work today.

With Love,

 Mary

The key to allowing this mantra to manifest its energy is by knowing the essence of what it is saying. Om, Bhur Bhuvas Suvaha draws it together. Om is the one letter word for God, Source, Creator, Bhramatma.   Bhur, bhuvas, suvaha can alternately represent the  human body, mind and spirit and also the creative energy, the infinite intellegence and the eternal love of the Creator.

The rest is the confirmation of praise and thanks and wonder to the Creator and desire to manifest the Oneness with Him/Her and with all other aspects of the Creation.

It is common practice to chant the Gayati Mantra in sets of three at sunrise, noon and sunset, or in sets of 27, 54 or 108 at those times of devotional meditation.  Many of the youtube videos will do 27 repetitions.

Kathy, thanks. I didn't know that Deva was part of the Oneness movement. That explains a lot of the spiritual energy which is exuded from her music.

Here is another video with Sai Baba chanting the Gayatri.  It's good because you can more clearly hear the words and cadence.
